Why yoga calms you down - the vagus nerve explained

Why you feel calmer after yoga 🦥

Maybe you know the feeling: you arrive at class stressed, tense or restless inside, and leave clearer, softer and calmer.

That's not just “mood”. It also has to do with your nervous system.

A key role here is played by the vagus nerve. It's an important part of the parasympathetic nervous system, the system linked to regeneration, digestion, rest and recovery. When the body finds its way out of constant “tension mode”, the parasympathetic system becomes more active. Breathing, heartbeat and muscle tone can regulate. The body gets the signal again: You are safe. You can power down.

Yoga can support this process. Not by magic, but very concretely: through conscious breathing, rhythmic movement, longer exhalations, mindful body awareness and moments of stillness.

One marker often used in research is heart rate variability, or HRV for short. It describes how flexibly the interval between individual heartbeats changes. A higher HRV is often seen as a sign that the nervous system is more adaptable and better at switching between activation and recovery.

Some studies on yoga and heart rate variability show that different yoga practices can be associated with improved autonomic regulation and increased parasympathetic activity. The evidence is clear: yoga can help shift the nervous system towards regulation.

A randomised study of women with elevated depressive symptoms also found an increase in parasympathetic activity and a reduction in stress and depressive symptoms after a 12-week yoga programme.

That's why after yoga you often feel not just stretched and worn out, but more sorted inside. The practice gives your system time to move from reaction back to regulation.

Not every yoga class feels the same. Some ask more of you, some are calming, some take you to your limits. That's part of the effect: your nervous system practises dealing with stimulus, effort and focus, and then finding its way back to a calmer state.
